Have students complete any of the following writing activities:

Characterization

1.  How does character of Scrooge change from the beginning of Christmas Carol to the end? Evaluate what events and personal revelations make him desire to change? Give specific examples from the story.

2.  Many of the other characters in Christmas Carol display particular human qualities. Using the Character Counts six pillars identify the following characters by the characteristics they displayed.

  • Tiny Tim
  • Joe the Pawnbroker
  • Nephew Fred
  • Bob Crachit

3. The character Scrooge seems to have experienced a life-changing event. Have you ever realize the error of your ways and changed your behavior? Explain you previous erroneous behavior, what event lead to the change and your current behavior. (self-to-text)

Rewrite the story

Rewrite a scene/portion from the story Christmas Carol.  Ideas might include: a different time period; the story written from another characters point of view;  another visitor who comes to further enlighten Scrooge.

Theme

  1. We have all received gifts sometime during the year. Reflect on gifts that you have received. What gifts were monetary? What gifts were not monetary? Focus on two gifts that you have received, one non-monetary and one monetary. Explain why both are worthy of note. Which gift means more to you?

Don’t be brief in your responses or writing assignments. Give details and support from the book to make your responses interesting to read.

  6. Write a letter to your teacher that is at least 2 paragraphs long and includes the following information: how the book and the authors life connect together—is the author represented in one of the main characters. How are you doing as a reader in connection with this novel.
  7. Write about a memory or experience of your own that is similar to one in the novel.
  8. Finish this idea: "I like the way the author…" Be complete and give examples to support your option.
  9. What seems to be the major point the author wants you to identify with or remember?
  10. Write a poem about the main character (the setting, the author, etc) with a special emphasis on developments in the novel.
  11. Write a poem based on the mood, images, or feeling aroused by the novel.
  12. Assemble a collection of quotable quotes from the text. Explain why you chose each.
  13. Construct a time line to fit the story. Include all of the main events.
  14. Did the characters in the work remind you of other people or yourself? Explain your response.
  15. If you could ask the main character two questions, what would they be? Why would you ask these questions?
